Fitness Friday: Finding Sun Amongst the Clouds
We made it to Friday and while it was a short week, it was also a challenging week. As of the last few months, I’ve had to really dig deep on some days to stay cheerful and optimistic. Between suffering an awful ankle injury, getting crushed with work, and trying to balance the rest of life has been hard. I’d be lying if I said it was easy or that I felt happy while going through it.
We all go through rough days and rough weeks. Some of those things are in our control, but most of it is outside of it. That being said, the one thing we can attempt to control is finding the good amongst the bad. It’s easier said than done, and I know how hard it can be to seek out positivity. For today’s Fitness Friday, I’m sharing a few ways I’m trying to find sun amongst the clouds.
Do what you love
When I’m in a funk, nothing pulls me out (even if it’s only temporary) than doing something I love. Depending on where I am, it could be something as easy as going for a walk outside. One of my favorite pastimes is getting a cup of coffee, sitting in a cafe, and reading the newspaper. I recently did that while I was visiting Sacramento for a wedding and it really warmed me to my core.
I obviously really love exercise and love training as well. A good solid training day will certainly pull me out of my mood. When I’m working out, I spend most of the time focusing on improving or pushing myself such that I have no time to think about the things that are going on outside the gym.
Give to others
Whether you donate your money or time, I feel incredibly full and happy when I’m able to give some of myself to others. Part of why I started coaching was that I wanted to give back. CrossFit and Arena Ready has given me so much over the course of the last almost 7 years. It’s only right that after taking so much that I give some of my time back. Seeing my friends push themselves, reach new highs, or break through ceilings reminds me why I love doing this throughout the week.
If you have the capacity to share a bit of yourself to someone, I think you’ll find that it can certainly give a little bit of light in dark moments.
Quiet time can be hard when you’re going through some tough stuff, but having that time to do reflection is critical for me. Whether it’s through meditation, journaling, or simply doing some reflection, I find having quiet time is a good way to decompress. It’s in these times that I remind myself about the things that are going well in my life and how fortunate I am to be where I am. Realizing and acknowledging both the good and the bad puts things into perspective, especially if I’m sweating over something small and/or not that important.
If you’re looking for a few good resources, I love the app Headspace. When I was going through my weight cuts, I relied on this to help me push through the hard times when I wanted to quit all together. I recently started my subscription back up again when I was having a hard time sleeping because I was stressed from work. Check it out if you’re looking for a good place to get started.
So today, no matter if you’re happy or sad that it’s Friday, try to find some sun in the clouds. If you’re looking for someone to share or talk with, please let me know and I’m always here to listen. Happy Fitness Friday friends, and have a wonderful weekend!
