Fitness Friday: Big Picture
After hearing the announcement for 17.5, I went through a wave of emotions. This ankle sprain has been hard, but I would take an ankle sprain over any back injury. When I saw that the workout comprised of 90 thrusters and 350 double unders, I had a number of thoughts. Do I try the workout on Saturday? Do I try it at all? I could hardly walk on Monday and the swelling in my ankle has only recently started to come down. For today’s Fitness Friday post, I’ve had to really think about the big picture in terms of what my goals are.
While I haven’t totally made up my mind, I’m very heavily leaning towards opting out of 17.5. The thrusters would be hard but not impossible. The double unders, however, seem to be my limiting factor. Doing a few wouldn’t be an issue, but doing 350 seems daunting. In thinking about where I stand today, I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished over the last four weeks. Each Open workout has brought on a new set of challenges, and each time, I went into the workouts with a clear and open mind.
I’ve taken stock in my highs and lows and I’m reminded about what the big picture is. Staying healthy has always been my number one priority since coming back from my back injury. I love the CrossFit Open, and each year, I’ve challenged myself to do things I never I thought I could do. If I can’t do this last workout, I would walk away very happy with what I’ve done this year. My biggest accomplishment this past year was completing all of those squat snatches at 95# and conquering my chest to bar pull-ups wall. The low point is obviously this ankle injury, but even that has brought on some new (and positive) realizations.
If you plan on doing 17.5, I’m really truly rooting for you. In a way, I’m envious that you’ll get a chance at doing a workout that I normally would really look forward to. Maybe 17.5 isn’t in your cards this weekend, in which case I hope that you do something that’s just as rewarding and satisfying. Either way, I’m hoping that you have a great weekend and a great Fitness Friday!
