May was birthday month and the food finds did not disappoint. Having visited some old favorites and discovering some new ones, May met all my expectations when it came down to turning 30. The month ended in Kauai, and if you haven’t checked out my post talking about what I ate and did there, be sure to check it out. But, here in the Bay Area, there were a lot of birthday celebrations which included a trip to the highly regarded restaurant Chez Panisse in Berkeley and re-visiting our wedding venue at Foreign Cinema for brunch.
After raving about Maruya’s sushi for a few months in front of Greg, we finally made it there together and I decided to something I had never done before – opted for the sashimi omakase instead of the nigiri. The fish trend continued when I decided to have a solo lunch excursion on my actual birthday where I found the Bowl’d Açai truck in Union Square and enjoyed their delicious fish while being in the sun. On top of my friend Jes baking me a cake for my birthday, we also went to Pabu for dinner where I was impressed with their chicken karaage. Greg and I finished out the month at two outstanding places in Chez Panisse and Foreign Cinema and it was so much fun to try something new and old.
For the May Favorite Food Finds, I’d label it as Monster May. With all the festivities and so many delicious and appetizing options, it certainly made it hard to find just one dish that I particularly liked. I feel incredibly lucky to have had so many dining experiences, especially at stand-out spots like Maruya and Chez Panisse, but I gotta hand it to the restaurant that will always have my heart in Foreign Cinema. The brunch at Foreign Cinema is outstanding and is certainly something worth experiencing if you haven’t had it yet. The Pop Tart is one of their famous dishes, but truthfully, the Heavenly Scramble and other egg dishes are easily second.
As always, check out my Yelp reviews for more in-depth reviews and photos from my dining experiences of some of the places mentioned here.
